Do You Know Me?
How much time will pass?
How much more will we let pass by?
How many more beautiful words
Will not pass our lips; and then we die?
A smile, a look, a grin, a blush.
Why are these confined to syrupy
Love stories, between the only
Two people who are permitted to
Be affectionate?
Why is love romance?
Why is gratitude unseemly?
Why am I the only one?
Why does so much go unexpressed?
There are not enough words
Nor the right kind
That express so great a love
That only gets bigger with time?
What are you afraid of?
Is this emotion uncool?
You know where I stand,
But not who I am.
A gift made vile
A touch made wrong
A smile misunderstood
My heart called unclean.
How can you say what I am
when you don't know youself?
Why must you categorize
And put me on a shelf?
Are you afraid of the time?
The effort? The hope? The love?
You fear what you do not know
But you only know fear.
Perhaps I am too trusting
Maybe I am too willing to
Lay it all out on the table.
Could it be you've never seen this before?
I could wait forever
Since forever is how long it will take
For you to know me
And know why I am.
Sometimes it takes a lifetime
to learn it doesn't take a lifetime.
